Description: Apart from painful bedsores that develop on the feet of long-term bed patients the inactive Achilles tendon, Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles of the lower leg gradually shorten over time. This is caused by the feet permanently resting in a non-flexed position forcing the patient to adopt a tiptoe stance when trying to stand after recovery.

This device prevents the formation of bedsores on the patient's feet and maintains the foot in a stable dorsi-flexion position to prevent muscle shortening. The device comprises a torus-shaped block of expanded polymer foam that is provided with an upper slot opening through which the foot is inserted into a channel in the centre of the block.

The channel is configured to accommodate and maintain the lower skin, ankle and foot of the patient at a 120 degrees angle. Conical openings that extend laterally from each side of the channel accommodate the bony prominences of the anklebones. The device is secured by Velcro straps to the feet of the patient.

By maintaining the feet in a dorsi-flexion position during long-term recovery, the muscles of the lower legs remain extended, while the heels, anklebones and feet are protected against concentrated pressure and development of bedsores.
